How to stack your dishwasher

16.03.2026

A well loaded dishwasher cleans more effectively, protects your dishes, and prevents damage to the machine. The placement of items is based on spray-arm design, heat distribution, water flow and basket designs.

Proper loading is also important so you can make the most of each cycle ensuring you can fit in as much as you can to reduce the number of cycles you have to run.

Pre-Loading Prep: do I need to rinse my dishes?

You should scrape large chunks off your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher to avoid clogging the filter and having to clean it (link to how to clean your dishwasher). However, rinsing is not essential, your dishwasher will be able to wash your dishes sufficiently with just scraping them. Not rinsing saves water and energy; most modern detergents even work better with some residue remaining on the plates.

Bottom tray

This tray is designed for larger, heavier items to avoid damaging the middle tray because the bottom tray can hold more weight. There are also larger spaced place plate supports to fit in larger items. Water pressure is higher here as it is closer to the spray arms, meaning more durable items that are less likely to break should be placed here.

General Plates and Bowls

Stack these in the designated plate support racks, the larger spaced rack should be for bowls and the smaller spaced rack should be for plates in order to keep them secure during the cycle and maximise the usage of each cycle.

Pans

Place pans upside down an in the flat part of the dishwasher, however they can also be placed on racks for extra support.

Bottles

The Hisense - HV693A60UVADUK  features a bottle wash designed with a cleaning stick to clean difficult-to-reach places and remove stains and resistant residues. Place bottles, jugs or tall jars upside down to clean them thoroughly. This means you no longer have to leave tall bottles on their side in the to collect dirty dishwasher water.

Middle Tray

This tray is designed to be more protective for smaller, more delicate items, due to the smaller gaps between the basket wires, ensuring nothing falls through. There is also gentler water pressure here as the spray arms are located at the bottom and the top of the dishwasher, this can help prevent glasses from chipping or breaking.

Glasses and mugs

Place glasses and mugs upside down on the raised outward-sloping sides to hold them securely, so they do not fall over during the cycle or opening and closing of the dishwasher. There are small shelves which when folded down can help secure the stem of a wine glass in place. Place the rim of the glass in between to basket wires to secure it in place.

Plastic Tupperware

Dishwasher safe plastic Tupperware should be placed upside down here to protect it and ensure it gets thoroughly cleaned. it is the coolest area of the dishwasher meaning it is less likely to be warped by heat. It also is the furthest from the spray jets, so Tupperware is less likely to be flipped over during a cycle resulting in it collecting dirty dishwasher during the cycle.

Small bowls and plates

Smaller more delicate bowls and plates can be placed here, as the smaller gaps in the wires will secure them better. There are also smaller spaced plate supports here for you to stack them and make the most of your dishwasher space.

Cutlery

Some dishwashers have a top tray which is best used for cutlery, this tray spaces out your cutlery to ensure a thorough clean for all items. This can be more effective than a cutlery basket as it is more spaced out and has better access to the jets.

Place cutlery on its side within the holding spikes so it is held in place and ensures a thorough clean.

Cooking utensils

The Hisense - HV693A60UVADUK  has a flexible cutlery tray allowing you to place larger cooking utensils such as knives or mixing spoons in this effective tray too as well as creating more space in the lower tray for larger items.

What items should never go in the dishwasher?

  • Wooden items: Such as utensils, chopping boards or bowls, this is because heat can cause the wood to crack and prolonged moisture damages the wood.
  • Cast iron cookware: The dishwasher can strip away the seasoning on your cast iron and the prolonged exposure to water can rust it.
  • Crystal or delicate glassware: These materials expand unevenly under the high temperatures which can cause hairline cracks or sudden shattering.
  • Copper and brass items: Harsh detergents in the dishwasher can strip the natural patina and excessive water exposure can lead to these materials tarnishing.
  • Non-stick pans (unless dishwasher safe): The non-stick surface can be broken down by harsh detergents and heat.
  • Sharp knives: The heat of the dishwasher as well as the abrasive dishwasher detergents can cause the sharp edge to dull.
  • Anything with a paper label on: The heat and the excessive water will cause the label to turn into mush which can clog the drain or spray arms. Read (link to how to clean) if this happens to your dishwasher.
