Be Creative to Cut the Costs: 5 Simple Fridge Tricks to Save you Money this January

20.01.2024
  1. Freezer Use

Got too many eggs to use? Well, you can store beaten eggs in the freezer for when you need them. Don’t worry about throwing away eggs because you got the egg ick after eating them a lot in a short amount of time, you can simply whisk them up and store in the freezer. The same goes for bread, which always seems to have slices that end up going in the bin. Now you can pop the loaf in the freezer, so it keeps for longer. When you want a slice just take it out and either defrost in the toaster or microwave. Features like Super Cool and Super Freeze on the RS818N4TFE are quality tech solutions that make using your freezer a total game changer. The freezer is such a handy tool in saving money, since you can store perfectly good food in there which may have otherwise just gotten thrown out. Be creative and use that freezer!

  1. Proper Food Storage

As much as it is nice to display fruits like apples in centrepieces in the kitchen, its actually costing you. That’s right, apples last up to 77 days longer in the fridge as opposed to room temp. There not the only food that needs the right storage to last. Mushrooms do much better when they’re wrapped in paper or put in paper bags in the fridge. Frost in the fridge can have detrimental impacts on your food and can force you to throw away what would have been perfectly good food. The RS818N4TFE has a truly quality solution – Total No Frost. This tech means that cold air is circulated evenly throughout the fridge and freezer, so no ice crystals will ruin your food. If you do enjoy displaying your fruits, however, opt for peaches, plums and cherries as these ripen at room temperature so don’t need to be refrigerated!

  1. Temperature zones

Understanding the different temperature zones of your fridge gives you the quality knowledge you need to save the pennies. In most cases fridges can be split into 3 zones. The top shelf usually has a high temperature zone, whereas the middle will have medium, and the bottom has a low temperature zone. The top area is ideal for leftovers, ready-to-eat food and cooked meats, cheese, and drinks. We don’t recommend storing raw meats here as they need to be chilled well, equally if the packaging leaks you don’t want raw liquids contaminating the other food in your fridge. The middle shelf is great for storing your favourite dairy products as well as condiments. Don’t put perishable items like milk in the door area though as the temperature here may fluctuate sometimes. The lower compartments and drawers are designed to maintain high humidity, this makes them ideal for fruits and veg.

  1. Baking Soda

The magic of baking soda goes beyond just making your baked goods rise, it’s also an incredible solution for many issues around your house, including your fridge. It’s a natural deodorizer and mould inhibitor. Here’s something to try if you struggle with smells in the fridge or just want to prevent them. Place an open box of baking powder on one of the shelves in your fridge and this will absorb any unwanted odours and prevent them from impacting your food. Sometimes the smells may make us feel like it's best to throw food away but sometimes it may just be the fridge. Stop the waste and prevent it with the excellence of baking powder. Another one of our favourite ways to prevent smells comes from the RS818N4TFE, which has Dual Temp Control Zone tech. This keeps the ideal levels of humidity and temperature for both the fridge and freezer and will keep your food perfectly preserved.

  1. Clear Containers

The bottom drawers are usually clear which is great for knowing exactly what you have in there, so you can keep an eye for what needs using first. However, sometimes after a big food shop its easy for the other shoves to become a jumbled mess. You can’t see everything so inevitably some food falls by the wayside and has to be chucked, wasting your money in the long run. To help avoid this you can take food out of its packaging if possible and place them in clear containers. These can be stacked offering you more space to use and helping you keep on top of what you have and what you need to use. The RS818N4TFE also includes soft LED lighting to give you a clear overview of what’s in your fridge, combined with the clear containers you’ll be able to everything with no problem. Plus, the lights are more efficient than standard fridge bulbs and save energy, who doesn’t love extra savings?
