Fridge freezers are the unsung heroes of the kitchen, helping keep everyone full and fed, but did you know they can also be major energy hogs? When it comes to being a savvy saver and an eco-warrior it’s all about getting on board with daily habits. That’s why we’ve broken down some of the major ways you can easily keep energy use to a minimum whilst also upping your savings!

Ideal Temperature

The ideal temperature for your fridge is around 37°F (3°C), while your freezer should be set at 0°F (-18°C). Any lower and you're just wasting energy. You can use a thermometer to ensure your appliances are keeping things at the right chill level. The RS818 comes with Smart Wi-Fi tech which enables you to use your phone to adjust the temperature anywhere and anytime.

Keep it Stocked

Believe it or not, a full fridge and freezer is more energy-efficient than an empty one! This is because the items inside act as insulation, helping to maintain a consistent temperature without overworking the appliance.

Mind the Door

Every time you open that fridge or freezer door, you're letting precious cold air escape. Be mindful of how long you keep the doors open and avoid unnecessary browsing (we know it’s hard). Also, make sure the seals are tight and free of any cracks to prevent leaks. With Hisense fridges like the RS818 you’ll be in the safe thanks to the Door Alarm. Thankfully you’ll be alerted if the door has been left open for too long thanks to its top-quality smart sensors.

Location, Location, Location

Where you place your fridge and freezer can also impact its efficiency. Keep them away from heat sources like ovens, dishwashers, and direct sunlight as this can cause your appliance to work harder to reach cooler temperatures and therefore use more energy. Instead, ensure there is adequate airflow around the appliances as this helps them run more efficiently. Thanks to creative design on the RS818 its Counter Depth feature allows it to fit into every kitchen, so you can place it flexibly in the optimum position!

Regular Maintenance

Just like any other appliance, your fridge and freezer need some TLC from time to time. Clean the coils, defrost the freezer if it's not frost-free, and check the door seals regularly. Ice crystals are no problem thanks to Total No Frost on the RS818 which keeps the ideal temperature and frost away.  A well-maintained appliance is a happy and (most importantly) an efficient appliance!

Consider Energy Efficiency

If you're in the market for a new fridge or freezer, look for models with good energy classes. These appliances have better energy consumption, for example the RB390N4WWE  is an E class fridge which uses up to 47% less energy than a F class product. Every little help so keep an eye out for energy ratings to keep your costs as low as possible.

The Right Size for You

When selecting a fridge and freezer, choose sizes that suit your needs. A larger appliance consumes more energy, so don't go overboard with extra space you won't use. If you have a larger family and need the extra storage, a side-by-side fridge like the RS818 is our favourite recommendation. However, if you don’t need tons of shelf space something like the sleek and streamlined RB390N4WWE is another great choice!

By implementing these simple yet effective tips, you can transform your fridge and freezer from energy guzzlers to energy savers, all while keeping your food fresh and your utility bills in check. You can just chill out and enjoy the savings! To learn more about which fridge is best for you head on over the Refrigeration Hub today!
